Donna, thanks for the info! It is a butternut wooly worm.. It's probably just a little bit younger than what you found. I also found some of the younger, hairless ones nearby. They didn't look as good as this though. :P They looked like the image on this page at bugguide.net but with a little more powder..

Hi Rayland,

My caterpillar is actually a "Butternut Wooly Worm". Not a caterpillar of butterfly or moth type , but the Larvae of a type of "Sawfly". I found the answer on the "What's that Bug?" web site. Yours is slightly different from mine but similar. You may want to send them the photo.

Rayland,
Oh wow. For an uncommon caterpillar, it seems to have quite a wide range?? It's in the Philippines and New Jersey??
I am going to have to do some research. If anyone finds anything about it, please let me know.
thanks

I just found 4 of these in my garden this morning. I have no idea what they are. When I google fluffy white caterpillar s i keep getting the "puss caterpillar", but I do not think these are puss caterpillars. They are different.
I live in new jersey. Where did you find yours??

I have no idea what this is. I did however, see several of them this spring on an oak tree. Have you solved the mystery?
